When we were little, we could imagine almost anything.
A blanket became a castle. A backyard became another world. We could say what we wanted to be without stopping to explain how we would get there.
It was enough to picture it.
Then we grew up.
There were bills to pay, people to care for, and things that needed doing. Somewhere along the way, “What if?” started turning into “Be realistic.”
Being practical makes sense. But maybe you’ve noticed how quickly we dismiss a lovely thought before we’ve even had a chance to enjoy it.
The Dreams We Keep Quiet
Not every dream is about changing your whole life.
Sometimes it’s learning to dance without feeling embarrassed. Taking a trip you’ve thought about for years. Having a little space by a window where you can write, draw, or simply sit.
Maybe it’s making something and being able to say, “I made that.”
We don’t always say these things out loud. Someone might laugh. Someone might ask, “At your age?” Or we might talk ourselves out of it before anyone else gets the chance.
So we go back to what needs doing.
But every now and then, that little thought returns.
Imagination Doesn’t Need a Job
Even our daydreams can start feeling like they need to be useful.
Could you sell it? Would it be worth the time? What would you do with it?
But imagining a little cottage with flowers by the door doesn’t have to become a plan to buy one.
Looking at pictures of somewhere beautiful doesn’t mean you have to book a flight.
And enjoying a song while picturing yourself dancing doesn’t require being good at dancing.
Sometimes a lovely thought can simply be a lovely thought.
We already have enough things on our lists. Imagination doesn’t need to become another assignment.
There’s Still Real Life
Of course, dreaming doesn’t make the bills disappear.
There may be money to save, responsibilities that come first, or things we can’t change right now. Some dreams change, too. What we wanted years ago may not be what we want today.
That can feel sad. It can also leave room to discover something else.
Maybe a trip isn’t possible this year, but reading about the places you’d love to visit is still enjoyable.
Maybe there’s no room for a writing studio, but there’s a notebook and a corner of the table.
It doesn’t have to look exactly as you imagined to be worth enjoying.
What Would You Enjoy?
That can be a surprisingly difficult question when you’re used to thinking about what everyone else needs.
Not what would impress someone. Not what would make money. Just something you’d like to spend a little time doing.
Maybe there’s a book you keep picking up, a place you always pause to look at, or something you loved before life got busy.
You might still love it. You might not. There’s room to find out.
And if nothing comes to mind today, that’s okay, too. Sometimes we’re tired, and a quiet afternoon sounds better than any adventure.
We’re Still Allowed to Dream
Growing up doesn’t have to mean putting every imaginative part of ourselves away.
We can be responsible and still wonder. We can appreciate our lives and still be curious about something new.
There are places we haven’t seen, things we haven’t tried, and ordinary little joys we haven’t discovered yet.
So if a forgotten dream visits you for a moment, perhaps you can let it stay awhile.
You don’t have to announce it or promise to make it happen.
For now, you can simply enjoy the thought.
